I got my new roaster! (Mini500 / 800N)

Postby Sunnyfield » Mon Jul 16, 2007 4:09 pm

Don't ask me how I did it, but I managed to convince my girlfriend this roaster fits in our 70m2 (770sqft) flat... :D

It is originally a Mini500 from Taiwan. But I bought mine from the sole agent, STS Coffee, in Hong Kong. They have relabelled it as the 800N. I paid less than the advertised price.

I bought it 2 days ago (Saturday) and received it today (Monday) already. It is gas powered. Here are some pictures of it.

A man after George's heart .... he'll be buying one for Mrs George now  . Don't forget to pass the odd coffee into your g/f .... you don't want her to be uncomfortable at all :P

Seriously though, aside of your chaff covered neighbours, this is very interesting. Are these things more afforfable than the gas Topers? If so, they could be a viable option for those wanting gas roasters. I shall watch with interest how you like it as things progress :D

If Carlsberg did girlfriends....

bloody nice looking machine.....I can't believe you have it in your apartment! I would be interested to know what it is like, seems in a similar price range to the Toper and it is a 1KG roaster?

Best of Luck with it and I hope you have understanding neighbours!

It is a 500g roaster, but so far I only did 250g batches. I tend to roast until 207C, so there is not all that much smoke. Still I am a bit anxious about possible complaints from the neighbours.

At the moment there is a special promotion that runs until 31 July on the Bellataiwan website, where the roaster is offered at a 10% discount at TW$75,600, which is roughly €1,700. Theoretically you could get your 5% VAT back, but only if the company is willing to sell it to you ex-VAT and I don't think they will. Then you have to add appx. 20% VAT for the EU (UK 17.5%, NL 19%, BE 21%, etceteras), which makes it €2,040. And freight is going to cost you between 200 and 400 euro, depending on the mode of transport (45kg weight, can be split up in two boxes of 22.5kg). So it can be yours for less than €2,500.

I got a double-digit discount from the HK agent on their list-price of HK$23,800 (€2,225).

A good price too Eward. So you are happy with the roast quality thus far then?

I am still trying to master this machine. There are three variables:
1) drum speed
2) heat (gas valve)
3) air-flow (vent)

The 2nd and the 3rd are used to control the roast curve. It is not as easy as it may sound, but it is heaps of fun! :)

My last roast tastes a little bit too much like Starbucks, so I might have to turn up the drumspeed a bit and/or shorten the roast.

It sounds like fun. I bet when you have mastered it you will have excellent profile potential :D . Maybe in the meantime your neighbours will think a 'buckies has opened up in the building

Edit: Yet another typo :(
