Murmuring

Postby PeterAG » Fri Feb 18, 2005 12:37 pm

Has anyone noticed at the end of a roast the noise that the beans make when cooling.
I roasted some Costa Rican last night (heat gun/saucepan) to just about the end of the first crack (light side of a city roast). On cooling the popping and crackling continued for a short while as normal (a few seconds). However, there was murmuring from within the beans which carried on until the beans were handlable. I had never noticed this before has anyone else??

Did it sound Spanish?
This isn't an early April Fools is it,hundreds of people tonight with their ears bent towards a pile of freshly roasted beans, saying 'pardon'?
Sorry Peter but this post has potential for some big leg pulls. :P

Seriously though, what were you cooling them in?
I suppose as they cool some contraction may take place, causing a noise.
Were they spread out flat or in a pile?

Woooo wooooo... Scary. Perhaps they usually only do it when nobody is there, and you surprised them? Or... for some reason they were dissatisfied? I know any Costa Rican visiting Gothenburg at this time of year would become very depressed indeed... is Cambridgeshire weather any better?

Seriously, no I have never heard that noise. On the other hand, my beans are usually cooling down on their own, I´ll listen to them more closely after this. Might not newly roasted beans suck in some air moisture as they cool down (by osmosis or something like that)?

My beans will continue cracking if I remove them when 2nd crack gets started, so maybe you're just hitting the first few snaps of second?

Hi
There was no joking. The beans were being cooled in a colander so essentially they were in a pile in between 'tossings'. It was most odd, perhaps it was just due to continued thermal expansion/decomposition or some other heat related phenomenon.
