Search for grinder for French press and syphon/vacuum pot

Destroyed my Starbuck Barista trying to replace the burrs. The replacement Barista/Solis 166/Dualit is set for espresso and the grind is vergeing on too fine even for syphon (at the coarsest setting).

The Vario has mixed reviews especially for the much touted ability to grind for French press ie. not really an improvement over the Solis.

Never been a fan of the Rocky-won't buy a grinder that needs to be modified with Teflon tape straight out of the box.

The only 2 grinders I like the sound of are the Ditting KF804 and the Mahlkoenig Guatemala, both of which are waaay out of my price range.

Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I did wonder about a Macap MC4 "bag" grinder although that also seems to be sold mainly as an espresso grinder. Anyone with any thoughts on this?

Look out for a second hand Mahlkonig Kenia or Guatemala. Be patient, they do come up and they are perfect for the job. Look to pay betwenn £100 - £250 depending on condition.

Personally I'm not keen on espresso grinders for brewed coffee use, even doserless or 'shop' versions, but that's just me.

Can the replacement grinder be adjusted?

like this http://www.ineedcoffee.com/07/hack-starbucks-grinder/

(there may be better examples...)

Definitely wouldn't bother with the Macap for this purpose.

You can pick up second hand bag/retail grinders on ebay. Be forewarned though, that burr sets for these can be pretty pricey, so if you end up with one with dulled burrs, better factor in that cost.

Thanks for the input. It's looking like a 2nd hand commercial and thanks for the tip re burr price-they are considerably more expensive than I had thought.
