PIDed kettle/boiler

Postby dsc » Wed Jun 17, 2009 5:08 pm

Hi guys,

has anyone ever tried PIDing a kettle, or at least adding some kind of temperature control device to get whatever temps you want? Now that I'm drinking more drip it seems it would be a nice thing to have such a 'boiler'.

Perhaps an adjustable thermostat is the answer? It's just an idea, at least now, I've got far too much stuff in the air to do anything with this, but would appreciate any suggestions.

Regards,
dsc.

I've been wanting to do this for a while.

Even have a spare Auber PID. Anyone care to throw together some suggestions / schematic, I'd be up for tearing apart a kettle.

Hi sys',

throw in an SSR and it should be very easy. Connect the SSR to the power cable and hook the PID to that. Add a temperature sensor of some sort (can be an RTD or a TC) and mount it in the kettle. You can probably throw it in through the top or drill the side and mount it there (it has to be leak free though so you should be look at tube fittings which tend to be expensive). Turn on the kettle as usual and let the PID do it's magic. When it reaches the correct temp you can use the water inside and put it back to heat it up again.

Regards,
dsc.

If you ever get such a device into production put me down for the first 10.

A temperature controlable kettle or boiler is something I have been looking for for ages. I cannot understand why it is not already available.

For quality Tea and for any Coffee other than espresso, it is absolutely needed.

Certainly, except, it is not yet available, and when it is available it will be horrendously expensive.

Also it is built into the counter. A pid'd kettle or small boiler, could/should be portable.

Hi Julie,

I'll be putting one together soonish (within the next few months). If it works properly I might be able to put one for you if you're interested. It will be a box with a cable that you connect to a chosen kettle (preferred as it's less like to get covered in water) or a box with a plug to which you connect the kettle.

Of course it will not be as uber as the uberboiler, but should work.

dsc.

Fantastic, if you need a prototype testing, let me know.

And better still if it is seperate from the kettle, then you can use it on multiple different kettles, or will it need to be fixed to the kettle somehow in order to check the temperature?

Hi Julie,

the sensor will be just a probe that you stick inside the kettle. That way you can pull it out and pour, or leave it and let it keep the temperature. I guess it's possible to add a clip to the cable to attach it to the kettle if one wants.

Thanks Alex, that is just what I was looking for, now I just need to find a Zojirushi supplier in Europe, preferably Netherlands.

Alex, re the Zojirushi, thanks again. It is a shame that they are only the 3 liter versions and only have 2 temperature settings.

The 5 liter version, has 4 settings.

But I have contacted the company and will see what it brings.

Ooh - was wanting a variable temp kettle. But crappiness with DIY-type tasks probably means trying to bodge something would be a bad idea...

Has anyone tried something like a Tefal quick cup?
