another cleaning question

Postby Sunnyfield » Mon Apr 05, 2004 7:05 pm

I sometimes use Swissgold (single-cup) filters. How do you clean these? Does it make sense to soak them in Urnex / Puly every now and then? I always rinse them under the tap first and then wash them in Fairy (aka Dreft).

A couple of days ago when I just rinsed the filter with hot water, I could feel the filter was still oily and indeed the coffee was rather bitter!

As the filters aren't subjected to the extremes found in espresso machines I am pretty certain ordinary washing up liquid will suffice. Puly or Urnex will destroy the plastic of the filter bodies very quickly. Not recommended.

Personally I've been trying to avoid putting any sort of detergent on my filters, I just wash with hot water and wipe with paper towel. Would detergents leave a taste that is hard to get rid of? And I've been assuming that dishwashers are a bad idea as well, am I right?

BruceB was telling me that Puly "...is a detergent and contains sodium tri-phosphate or a related phosphate", but my chemistry's not that good, so I just take it that salty bird poop ;) is too strong.

I put my Swissgold one-cups in the dishwasher - no problem. However Puly etc is much, much harsher than dishwasher detergent - I got some on the plastic bristles of a brush I use for cleaning my group heads and the bristles just wilted.

Washing up liquid is good enough however. It doesn't make my cups taste bad and I'm sure the same will be true of the filters.

If you're worried about the strength of Puly or express clean, why not use a washing powder???? I sometimes use a mature technician with navy history, when sending machines north. He swares by DAZ! It's a milder. if you have to put chemicals in the path of your coffee...use a mild or safe one??? :?:

Peter, you might want to re-read the above! If I hadn't met your very lovely and charming wife I would be wondering what you meant by the above. Hello Sailor!

Sorry, just teasing! Forgive me?

How could you? No it's true. Or does that make it sound even more suspicious. Inuendo aside, washing powder is apparently a milder version of puly, aledgedly, vicar etc.

just... can't... think... of a non-vulgar way of describing the accumulation of coffee oils on these one cup filters after all that, so suffice to say, from experience they do need a thorough clean in soapy water after each use and I always rinse my washing up to remove any detergent afterwards anyway so haven't found it to be a problem.
