A question of taste

Postby Tongle » Mon Feb 22, 2021 7:11 pm

My grinder died. That’ll teach me for trying to clean it! I can fix it though it means waiting a couple of weeks for a part.

So I bought a hand grinder but am now lost in a confusion of grind sizes. I’d got just the right sizes dialled in in my Baratza but now have no point of reference for my hand grinder.

Anyway, the question I have is one of taste. I’ve never really understood when others describe coffee as being ‘bitter’ or ‘sour’. I suppose I know when a coffee tastes ‘nice’ but again with no point of reference it’s hard to decide what difference the grind size has made unless I make two coffees at time to compare.

Maybe it’s my ageing palate but the subtleties of ‘bakers chocolate with a hint of lime and green apple on the finish’ seem beyond my abilities to detect.

So is it just me or am I just doing it wrong?
