Portafilter baskets

Postby Gouezeri » Wed Dec 08, 2004 1:49 pm

Ok, there have been some interesting comments here about PF baskets recently, so I thought I'd start a new thread. Baskets are probably the cheapest "upgrade/modification" you can make. So, have you changed your PF baskets from those supplied and if so, why? Please detail what type of basket it is and what machine it is used with (unless this info is obvious from your sig).

Yes I have. LM "double" (probably more like a triple). In the end I reverted back. I also have an LM single but that's a different matter entirely.

Why did I give up? Well on my 2 group I had only one LM basket, and it gave quite different results to the generic basket on the other group (to the extent of needing a slightly different grind). When producing several shots at a time this just got too awkward.

I didn't try and source a second LM basket from the good folks at AC as the one I have only fits one of my PF handles, and then (with the LM basket in place) it only fits one of my groups as well. Darned odd, but I lost interest after a while.

The results from the generic baskets are different, but not sufficiently so to be a matter of concern. Frankly the upgrade I really hanker after would also require me to buy a 53mm tamper!

LM double and single as a straight swap for Rancilio double and single. Much better.

Cheers

LM double and LM single (which makes the best shots imnsho)

LM double for me too, works much better than the original. The Silvia came to me with a ridgless LM "style" basket, but I find the proper LM easier to tamp level.

Just so I'm absolutely clear on this:

I *liked* the (genuine) LM double / triple / whatever. It's just that, since I couldn't manage to get two of them to fit my machine at the same time and the grind requirements were different to those of the generic double baskets on my TD, I was reluctantly forced to give up using mine.

I've still got it though and when I next replace the shower screen on my left group I'll re-check the fit (there do seem to be some odd diffferences between my two groups).

I voted no because:
1. I wouldn't have a clue what to get and I'm not yet well versed in the differences and how many different types there are
2. My machine, Espressa Mini (E2K Jr.), is still a fairly new acquisition for me (not even 2 months), and I still have a lot to learn...

Any suggestions? Will a different basket improve my shots?
