Those damned baskets

Postby quink » Mon Mar 25, 2013 6:02 pm

Ever since the pavoni was plumbed in, I've been wondering why the espresso tastes different than the silvia espresso. Same beans, same grinder, both machines have the same pump, 58mm groups, and the pav gives a rock solid 94c water supply whilst the silvia is 96-92c, which was in line with SCAA temp recommendations when I checked it setting up the pid.

It happened today whilst doing the weakly puly soak of the PFs I noticed the pavoni double basket is deeper than the rancilio double by a good 4mm or so. And better than that the pav basket fits straight in to the silvia PF.

This gave me my first oh wow moment of my recent silvia modding journey. Pid, gauge, opv, insulation etc. all pales in comparison to this simple £4 modification.
I remember a couple of years ago LM baskets used to be considered the best, is this still the case, as I'm probably going to order up a couple of commercial pavoni double baskets next time I order a load of coffee, and was wondering if I should order up the LM whilst I was at it.
