Mazzer Super Jolly Auto

Postby qwerty69 » Mon Jan 09, 2012 12:58 am

So I've finally ordered the Mazzer a Super Jolly Auto, with the standard hopper (which will go in my garage for possible future use).

Does anyone have any thoughts as to what I should use instead of the hopper? I have a spare tamper which is a little smaller than 58mm and quite heavy; will this do initially?

Also any tips on using the grinder would be appreciated?

I'm quite excited about the purchase and I'm fully expecting to be like a kid waiting for Christmas by the time it arrives (hopefully by a week tomorrow).

You might want to make yourself a Schectermatic for the doser to get better results. Otherwise, have fun with that big piece of equipment :)

Can anyone confirm if there's anything I need to do once I take off the hopper; will the grinder just work as normal or is there something I need to do to fool it into thinking the hopper is in place?

Well, I've got an SJ with no hopper . . . works just fine. Enough beans for a double fit in the grinder now and I use a blindfilter to 'seal' the grinder when grinding so no half ground beans end up everywhere.

edit: afaik, you can just take out the hopper and you're good to go.

Love it. I could possibly do something a little more permanent by lopping the bottom off a keep cup. Or maybe an aluminium drinks bottle?

On the other hand the white paper cup looks really minimalist and could easily be decorated to match the kitchen :)

The possibilities are endless.

You might look around cookshops for a "canning funnel" or "Jam funnel". There are stainless steel ones around, and some of them have a neck size (about 58-60mm) that fits exactly into a Mazzer. I have one, but it gets used for its intended purpose, although I did try it out in the grinder and it was a perfect fit.

I mean this sort of thing. Not sure if this exact one would fit, but it sounds pretty close from its description, and you'll probably be able to find one in the UK anyway.

They look quite neat when used as a grinder hopper.

Does anyone know a supplier stocking genuine Mazzer Burrs to fit the SJ?

I've had a quick look on some sites but can't find anyone stocking the genuine article.

Nearly here. Had SJ delivered to my mums as she's always in but happened to be out for five minutes.

Picking up from the depot tomorrow :)

Managed to collect the Super Jolly, which is one of the older models.

Haven't had time to turn it on yet but man does it need a clean.

Also I can see why people moan about the placement of the auto sensor! How are you meant to get everything clean?

Anyone got any pointers for how best to tackle?

Just a quick picture of the Super Jolly:

along with its new small hopper (a Phillips Avent baby cup with the bottom removed). Inspired by Isjms.

Apologies if the photo above is quite big.
