Disappointing Purchase Replacement E61 Shower Plate/Screen

Equipment, technique, or just drinking the stuff

After all this I did finally get round to replacing the screen on Anna at the weekend. I did manage to destroy the old one in the process. I dont know how long the old screen had been on for but its a year since we got the machine. The rubber gasket was starting to harden so it was probably the right thing to do but there was next to no gunk under the screen - just a very light covering of coffee oils. I am now feeling somewhat happier that I didnt rush to do it earlier and wont be doing it again for a year.

I did take pics (Wife was very understanding when I said that now I had Anna naked I was off to get the camera) but they are not to hand

I replace my shower screens at 6-12 month intervals. I take them out and clean them weekly and I am careful not to bend or damage them (easy on most commercial machines), but they do wear out. I replaced one recently that looked fine, but since I was seeing channeling with my single basket I decided to change and the channeling disappeared with the new screen. Shower screens are the most commonly replaced parts on most machines.

I decided I needed a bit of a change so I roasted some Monsooned Malabar. That was a change!

Tell you what; there is not half some bollocks spoken here at times!
I am a businessman and personally, I take responsibility for everything I do. If I decide to order some substard rubbish and pass it off then that is a conscious decision.
The very fact that you can buy quality shower screens elsewhere proves this quite simply.
If you buy something and are not happy with it, then send it back and tell the company concerned, otherwise they may never know!

Well it would be hard not to see the poor quality of these screens! For £3 it would be a waste of time and effort returning it (basic economics). I have learnt that I need to order the pressed variety in future. That nugget of information cost me three quid. hey ho

Thanks for contributing.

I am with daveyb on this. If I was Scott, and I acknowledge the fact that you have taken pains to point out you don't have an issue with him, I would be annoyed that you had put this on a specialist and relatively open forum that will affect peoples decisions on where to purchase items in the future. In my view unless you had contacted the supplier the thread should have been limited to talking about the poor quality product without mentioning where it was purchased.

If you had read the thread you would have noticed that HD are not the only company mentioned in this thread! I have purchased items from all the companies mentioned and what's more I shall purchase items from them in the future. What I won't be purchasing are shower screens of the design mentioned in this thread.

The point of this thread is the shower screen quality not the supplier! I was unaware of the fact that there were/are two flavours to choose from. I would assume that there are other people that use this forum who are also unaware of that fact. After reading this thread they can make an informed decision, when they place an order for a shower screen. Isn't that what a specialist forum is intended to be used for?

Whoever they order it from all they need to do is ensure it is a pressed steel design, and not the welded type as mentioned in the opening post.

The other point which seems to have been lost was a request for a source of the pressed steel version in the UK.

The fact that you and others have attempted to try and bring a controversy into the thread where none exists, is bizarre to say the least.

A more useful contribution would be to simply state where a screen of the type requested can be found in the UK.

Cheers

I don't think anyone in the thread is intending to have a dig at Scott, though he does seem to be the only one here not in the loop.

Just for clarity at this point, I'll reiterate that we have both types of showerscreen in question. One is certainly better than the other and the differing patterns of each do require subjective grind settings, though the other type do work perfectly well and they are intended for a commercial environment where tolerances are considerably different to those of an enthusiast.

Scott's reputation proceeds him on the forum and I'm sure he would be more than willing to sort out any issues brought to his attention.

Probably a daft question, but why has he not sorted this out? Are seriously suggesting he is not aware of this thread?

I'm not sure why this tread is turning into a bun fight. When I posted the opening thread HD was mentioned as they were the source. They also distribute my machine which is why I placed the order with them. The surprise for me was that the part was not a direct replacement.

I don't doubt that they are usable and pointed out my reasons for not liking the part with supporting images. It's purely information for others who may not be aware of the difference. I was unaware of it as I have not come across any topics that have covered variations of this part, here or in any other machine related forum. I was there fore unable to make an informed decision, hopefully others will benefit from my mistake.

When I reviewed the HD website the same part is listed for all machines utilising the E61 group. HD don't offer an alternative part on their site currently and there is no mention of any options available. There for I haven't contacted them as there seems very little point in doing so. Had I been aware of the two types I wouldn't have ordered the screen at that time.

The seals were the parts I was desperate for the screen was just a side issue. There was no problem with any of the other bits and bobs and the delivery was punctual. My machine was back in action job done.

I would hazard a guess that there is nothing to sort out.

The only question is where is a good source in the UK for the part in question?

I'm not wanting to fuel any acrimony here, but way back in response to the first post I mentioned that I'd got a shower screen from BellaBarista that appeared to be identical to the original one (that is clearly superior to the replacement that is at the centre of this thread).
Now I know that the photo on the BB website shows a riveted version, but I've just had another look at the one that I've got, intended for my Rocket, and it's clearly the better versions. Part number at BB is FE07, cost under a fiver.
A phone call to Claudette should have the sourcing of this little demon well and truly sorted!

I don't agree with double_shot but I don't want to prolong an issue that is peripheral to the main topic so I will gracefully shut up ... but nevertheless

Thanks Geoff for taking the trouble to confirm your earlier post. If BB get any greens in that I fancy I will ask about the screens.

geedee you're not the first and defiantly wont be the last to disagree with me. Guess that's why some of us prefer to shoot over GWP's and not HWV's.

Well recognised, I am impressed ... I don't shoot much these days as I pick up on a couple of the big shoots in the SW 2 to 3 days a week and that takes all my spare time in the winter. Do you get out much?

Quite possibly not Davey. I don't think Scott reads forums as regularly as some of us. He doesn't post very often.
