E61 Portafilters with elbow.

Why do E61 double spouts have an elbow. Cimbali portafilters don't, the coffee drops directly into the 2 spouts. Surely this is a better design. Less curves and corners to disrupt the crema. You can buy single spouts that have no elbow, but I have yet to find such a double.
