Convex tamper, worth trying?

Postby simonp » Thu Oct 21, 2004 8:47 pm

I've been using a flat bottomed 58mm chunky alluminium tamper that I bought secondhand with my Silvia a few months back. I've been using a La Marzocco double filter basket for a while now and do still occaionally under-dose a fraction and the tamper hits the ridge. I'm wondering if a convex tamper would help alleviate this problem, thoughts anyone?

If a convex one would be good, what should I go for? A lot do seem to be over-priced fasion items for what is basically a wooden handle (in most cases) with a lump of alluminium or stainless steel on the end, or am I mis-judging them?

I have a Reg Barber convex (Espresso Warehouse) and a Schomer "Ergo" tamper.

Personally I'd take the Barber. The Schomer's nice, but the Barber is my everyday instrument. I never hit the ridge on the La Marzocco basket if I fill the basket correctly for my Gaggia.

I believe Sunnyfield, who has the Ergo and tried my Reg Barber for a while, feels the opposite - he prefers the Ergo.

You pays your money etc.

But is the RB really worth the money?

tamper views

Postby pault » Thu Oct 21, 2004 10:23 pm

My personal view on the convex/concave issue is that it's not clear to me what the advantage of the convex is (I've used both) and the two different people I've contacted for custom-made tampers i.e. people who make them for a living both recommend the flat.

regarding the Reg B - I think they're good but resting on the name a bit.

the general issue of how important they are - both practically a good tamper makes a big difference to the consistency of your pull and aesthetically (I think the looks of kit are important) I find them one of the nicest gizmos a coffee-nut uses. I'm sure there's a Karate Kid/Samurai type article to be written about "the true barista is at one with his/her tamper..."

will give the low down on the new ones (and a comparison with my other ones) I'm waiting on as soon as I get them.

in the meantime - they're difficult to get hold of but the impods are great ...

all the best,

Paul.
