scace-like thermometer - variation

Postby Bertie_Doe » Sat May 03, 2008 9:57 pm

Following on from dsc's interest in a scace-like thermometer set-up, I decided to buy a K type, 1mm s/steel, ungrounded thermocouple, to feed the 2nd output on my digi themometer at £23.

I purchased my Omega HH12A a couple of months ago, to monitor boiler temps with the K type open junction t/c supplied. This is inserted in the thermowell of the boiler. There are better digi thermometers, with higher specs - but you get what you pays for.

I got some good ideas from this great thread in HB http://tinyurl.com/2v6ghv I used a spare portafilter and blind filter. You make a small 1mm hole in the blind filter to take the t/c and another one to allow sufficient outflow of water, to give say 9.25bar. You can always enlarge the hole etc.

My first attempt gave me 10bar and about 85C. Unfortunately I hadn't read the smallprint on the Araldite (max temp 65C) and the bond failed.
I ordered some JB Weld (marine) and also went to the local tool supply, to get a brass Nut & Tail, to protect the thermocouple from knocks. I shall try again tomorrow or Monday and post results. Meanwhile here is a slideshow
