La Marzocco double basket

Postby phil » Fri Feb 20, 2004 2:38 pm

A couple of days ago I was lucky enough to get hold of a La Marzocco double basket. I don't think this is a big enough topic for a review just yet, so I'm starting a thread on the subject. Maybe later I'll collate the information and translate it to content.

Observations :
  • Right - first thing to say is that the basket is an unusual shape. The cross-section is basically rectangular, rather than tapering toward the bottom like the other baskets I have.
  • Secondly, the holes don't cover quite all of the base. There is a gap round the rim of the base of maybe 2mm before the holes start. Also, and this may just be me, but they look a tiny bit bigger than those in my generic basket.
  • Thirdly, the internal diameter of the top of the basket is slightly less than that of my generic baskets. My Reg Barber tamper is a snug fit, rather than having around a 1mm gap as it does on the generic baskets. I would say that this means the internal diameter is 57mm maybe?
  • Fourthly, the basket is a tough job to fit into my portafilters. In fact it doesn't seem to want to fit my twin-spout handle at all. It does fit my single spout handle, which has a weaker (or is that maybe wider) internal spring clip. I think I've seen something posted somewhere about fitting the basket into a portafilter - I vaguely recall a recommendation to remove the clip. Anyone else recall this, or am I confusing the reference with something else maybe?

I've so far only pulled a few shots with the basket. The results were nothing I could point to and say "wow", but then I think the differences are going to be a bit more subtle than that. I need to get a blend dialled in and then pull a number of shots side by side using a normal double and the La M double, just to see if I can see any difference. If I have time I may try and do that later today, if not over the weekend sometime.

And yes Neku I know a pictures is worth a thousand words. I'll try and take one later today (same caveat).

Cheers

Phil

Phil,
The Marzocco baskets have an ideal fit in the Giotto portafillers. And apposite to your experience, my 58mm tamper can go all the way to the bottom of the basket...
But have to agree about the results... The double basket does make a different to the standard basket of Giotto, but the difference doesn't come even near the huge difference the single-marzocco-basket makes.

Interesting. I have a single La M basket too, but I have trouble fitting it on my groups if I cover the base with coffee. If I just put coffee in the "well", it's much less of a problem, but that seems to be an odd thing to do.

Hi Phil,
Can I ask where you got the LM basket from as I am quite keen to try it?

I would have thought you could guess - our excellent friend in Gloucestershire, although last time I looked, this item was listed on the site.
