espresso, the right amount

Postby moccafaux » Fri Jan 02, 2004 5:24 pm

I learned from the italian definition that an espresso is around 25ml.
In the anglo-saxon world most go for 1oz=30.5ml.
Is there a reason for this other than the somewhat weird avoirdubois system of measuring?

UK fl oz is 0.284ml
US fl oz is 0.296ml

So take your pick! Most marked shot glasses are US fl oz, which is fine for making a shot.

There is a really nice freeware converter program for PCs at :
http://www.joshmadison.com/software/convert/
It tackles a massive number of conversions; for these two, it seems to think
1 fluid ounce (UK) is 28.4 ml and
1 US fluid ounce is 29.6 ml.

Happy New Year to all,

Hugh

I was in Rome a month ago and I by the looks of it a double-shot was around 40 - 45ml, if I had to guess.

Absolutely not. As a mathematician and a theoretical physicist by training I cannot see the logic in avoirdupois measures, and as a European I want to use European measures anyway. Over here, things have to be packaged in metric quantities. It's the law. Some unreconstructed reactionary so-and-so's package Imperial quantities and label them with the metric equivalents, but that's just plain silly.

Apologies to our friend Dr Zeus, but I think you'll find that the persistence of the usage of ounces in espresso measures is because of our North American friends. The fact that they don't even use "real" ounces but ones they invented themselves makes it all the sillier!

Ignore them. We're European. We can't totally ignore what the Americans do, there are too many of them. But this is one case where we don't need to care.

That convert program's very helpful, I'm trying to buy a solid oak floor for the bottom floor of my little house and half the places insist on quoting in square yards, I think they're only doing it to make their prices sound lower than they are. Metric works, Imperial is work (and American Imperial is just plain silly!)

Thats astonishing!
I created quite a long thread by asking my friends at www. cyclingplus.co.uk whether they see themself as european. The vast majority made the distinction between being british or being from the continent (=eurpe).

Well I've always thought of myself as European. You wouldn't expect one of the founders of a euro-centric web site to be anything else though would you?

Don't say it too loudly, or every European web site will want one!
