And the price 35 years ago was three times what it is today and on 14 April 1972 reached $3.35 / lb and averaged >$1.20 for most of the 70, 80, and 90's. Ultimately this is not really the point though and the film is about disparities in the value chain as much as the headline figures.
As I said, I haven't seen the movie yet, so I do not know what the message of the movie is.
If it is about the disparities in the value chain, then I hope the movie makers refrained from rhetoric about consumers paying $2.50 for 300ml of hot water, and the cost of the beans being less than 4 cents per cup.
Anyway, I got to see it before commenting! |

| Regrettably it does tend to oversimplify this in some ways, i.e. nothing more than a cursory or momentary glance at costs to retail coffee wet or dry; however it does spend a bit more time looking at the value between roaster and smallholder. While the film is not without its faults it is definitely worth a look. |

The coffee calculator on their website is so painfully innaccurate it makes me very cross.
http://www.blackgoldmovie.com/CoffeeCalculator/
All you roasters - you are clearly bad people and all the cafes only make 10-15% of the cost of an espresso...
Its the little details they constantly seem to miss that drive me nuts. |

It's off the charts inaccurate!
Try reversing the roaster and the retailer portions and it starts to look half-way accurate (given that most retailers would try and make 70-75% at GP level). |

I'm fairly sure they wont until the film has been screened on a larger scale. But as I said Canada will ship (I think they are a little more relaxed about that stuff. I've just ordered Starbucking from the states too, which is meant to be a cool film.

Tis true evil and bad, now where did I put that spare change for my new ivory back scratcher? . Its like they looked at one part of the industry and made there mind up straight away on the idea for the film then did it.
I know what you mean about it driving you mad. I think if you stand on the moral high ground you need to be aware of everything else around you, and this is where they fell over.
Its a shame there are parts of this film I really love, and some that drive me wild. |

Well I've bought a ticket to see the film at Wolverhampton Light House on 29 June. The film will be followed by a debate, with the panel including the film's Directors, Marc and Nick Francis.
All for just £4.90!
Should be interesting. |
